The 55th Design Automation Conference (DAC) will cover many topics for chip and system designers. Although diverse, the event reflects the preoccupations of the industry, namely ensuring functional safety in design, and the role of AI and machine learning (ML) in design for today and tomorrow.
Experts at the Table, part 3: Which companies will use the cloud and for what, what else needs to be done to accelerate this model, and why it’s taking so long.
Without the slightest bit of exaggeration, the month of April was eventful for all of us at the ESD Alliance. We hosted two well-attended events and announced a memorandum of understanding where the ESD Alliance will become a SEMI Strategic Association Partner.
Years (decades) ago, Robert Townsend, the CEO of Avis, faced a problem. Hertz was several times as big as Avis. Avis was losing money. He asked the Bill Bernbach, the head of his advertising agency DDB, how he could effectively get $2 of advertising for every $1 he spent. Bill said that he should simply promise to run whatever ads they came up with. Unchanged. "You will have every creative in my office moonlighting on your account." As it happened, nobody was that happy with the "we try harder" campaign that they had come up with...but Townsend had promised to run the ads unchanged. They ran for 50 years.
Artificial intelligence (AI) and its two main offshoots, machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL), are hot topics right now. But in actual fact. It can be traced back to a conference in 1956 at Dartmouth College. At the time, researchers considered designing systems that resembled characteristics of the human brain. But how far have we got in applying these technologies not only to improve the design tools themselves but also to address the new verification challenges presented by AI-based architectures?
